Instructional Design for Blended and Online Learning  - OPL Facilitated Course
(6 weeks, 2-4 hrs/week)

This course is for teachers who already have some experience using the tools in D2L, who want to discover how to create an engaging, interactive, online module or project that applies the building framework of instructional design, content, and e-pedagogy. Participants will learn about online instructional design (i.e. scaffolding modules, organizational strategies etc.), how to encourage effective online communities of learning, and effective online assessment techniques, while they build a 2-3 week online project or module that they can apply directly to their teaching practice. Participants will also have the opportunity to use page templates in DreamWeaver for their module. Examples of online projects, references to research in online education and other online tools are made accessible to participants throughout the course to assist development of innovative ideas, personalized learning and student engagement. Participants will be given access to the course for one school year with their registration.

Learner Outcomes

  • Use the basic understanding of Universal Design for Learning to create online tools to facilitate project accessibility;
  • Use backward design to develop an online organization structure;
  • Create an online project that demonstrates that use of scaffolding techniques;
  • Create discussion questions that engage various learning styles and entry points for meaningful outcomes;
  • Explore the use of page templates in DreamWeaver;
  • Identify appropriate online assessment techniques for online project activities.

Note: This is an online course. Participants are encouraged to attend the weekly BlackboardCollaborate/Elluminate sessions to help develop community and deeper understanding of the course content.
